Pea Ibis Seeds Average Seeds 200
Pea Ibis Seeds Average Seeds 200
- Garden Plants & Bushes
An impressive new semi-leafless type (these plants are semi-self-supporting and are less prone to fungal diseases as with reduced leaf area i.e there is more air movement through the plants). Ideal for maincrop or late sowings because of its resistance to powdery and downy mildew, Ibis produces flavoursome peas for fresh use or freezing. Maincrop/late variety for spring sowing.TOBY'S TIP: For the best tasting peas, pick in the evening before the seeds are fully round and cook within an hour - that's if the children do not eat them all raw! For Pea Salad Sprouts, grow in a seed tray on a windowsill. Harvest by cutting when the young plants are some 15cm (6") tall. From trials, we recommend using Onward seed for the best taste. For conventional crops, dig the ground, ideally incorporating plenty of well rotted garden compost, preferably in autumn or winter. Sow outdoors 5cm (2") deep, approx. 20 seeds per 30cm (12"), in flat drills 15-20cm (6-8") wide, with 60-90cm (2-3') between rows. HEALTH BENEFITS: A good source of vitamins and folic acid. Mangetout types are a good source of vitamins A & C as the pod is eaten in addition to the seeds and are high in potassium. Peas also contain soluble fibre useful in removing harmful cholesterol. Eat raw or steam gently to retain nutrient values. As soon as pods are harvested, sugars begin conversion to starch, so eat soon after picking.

Beetroot Chioggia Pink Seeds Average Seeds 300
Beetroot Chioggia Pink Seeds Average Seeds 300
- Garden Plants & Bushes
We now have further seed supplies of this popular Italian beet, so are pleased to re-introduce this unique variety. Round in shape and with a light red outer skin, the main feature of this variety is its unique internal structure with concentric rosy-red and white rings. Crops 12-16 weeks from sowing. F1 hybrids last longer in good condition than ordinary types. In a sunny spot sow seed thinly in drills (straight shallow grooves) made 30cm (12") apart and cover with about 1.25cm (½") of soil. Thin resulting seedlings to 5-7cm (2-3") apart. Alternatively for raised beds you can sow in small blocks with a spacing of 5-7cm each way which is more space efficient. Sow at 2-3 week intervals late April-early June for continous cropping from June-December. Row length per pack: 7.5 (25'). Harvest June-December. HEALTH BENEFITS: A proven superfood! Roots are rich in potassium and folate plus some vitamin C. The young leaves are rich in beta carotene, calcium and iron. CULINARY HINT: Don't waste the leaves, use them like spinach! Cooking can actually increase the nutrient value. Cook the young leaves or use them in salads.TOBY'S TIP: Twist off leaves to remove. Cutting induces 'bleeding' of the messy sap.

Pepper Alexander Seeds 8 Seeds
Pepper Alexander Seeds 8 Seeds
- Garden Plants & Bushes
The pepper that thinks it is a tomato! Yes it really is a round, tomato shaped pepper! The dark red, sweet, shiny fruit are ideal for use in salads or for stuffing. Though the fruits are sweet, there is a slight after-taste of heat. Crops 18 weeks from sowing. We recommend 'grafted' varieties for earlier cropping and larger crops. Sow under glass as for tomatoes and grow on in pots in a cool greenhouse or tunnel. Redskin and Apache F1 can be grown outdoors on a sunny patio in warm areas, preferably against a sunny wall. TOBY'S TIP: Peppers are unique. Grow them in a 30cm (12") pot and the fruits will reach their full size. Grow them in a 15cm (6") pot and they will produce mature fruit, only much smaller. HEALTH BENEFITS: Red and green peppers are high in vitamin C and the red very high in vitamin A. CULINARY HINT: Try sweet pepper strips raw with dips or roasted whole and stuffed! make a simple chilli oil by adding whole chillies to a bottle of olive oil (puncture them to make them sink). Take care when preparing chillies as the substance which causes the 'hot' flavour can also cause irritation if it comes in contact with the eyes.

The 'lunch box' cucumber! Aptly named, this mini 'cuc' is one of the sweetest we have ever found on our trials. Harvest this little beauty from 7.5cm (3") up to 15cm (6") in length. Very prolific and has resistance to powdery mildew disease. Greenhouse/outdoor cucumber. Crops 12 weeks from sowing. Sow seed singly on edge in 9cm (3½") pots under glass at 18-21°C (65-70°F) February-May for greenhouse crops or April-May for outdoors. Later pot on plants into large pots, about 25cm (10") in size, or plant them out in a frame/greenhouse or outdoors. (Do not plant in cold frames until May.) Leek Sprintan F1 Seeds Average Seeds 45
Leek Sprintan F1 Seeds Average Seeds 45
- Garden Plants & Bushes
Well named, Sprintan certainly gets a move on to be our earliest maturing leek. From spring sowings, it will mature from late August through to November. As this suggests, it has good 'standing' ability and long green 'shanks'. Has good resistance to leek rust fungus. Crops 30-45 weeks from sowing. A versatile vegetable which may be taken young as tasty salad leeks or matured to the traditional autumn vegetable. Sow thinly, 1.25cm (½") deep in grooves 23cm (9") apart in an outdoor seed bed March-April. When seedlings are 20cm (8") high, transplant to final positions after watering the seed bed. Using a dibber/trowel, make holes 12.5-15cm (5-6") deep and 23-30cm (9-12") apart each way. Place a plant in each hole and fill with water to settle roots. Water frequently and gradually earth up plants, continuing until October. Grow leeks of exhibition quality by sowing under glass in February. Harvest September-March. TOBY'S TIP: Try salad leeks as a milder alternative to spring onions in summer. Earthing up plants for traditional leeks to blanch the stems is important to keep them tender for winter use. HEALTH BENEFIT: A good source of potassium, folic acid and vitamins A & C. Also has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. CULINARY HINT: Traditional for soups and stews whose slices are also ideal for stir-fries.
